Romanticism was a radical movement that began around the end of the 18th century. This artistic trend represented a change in mindset amongst painters, artists, writers, poets, musicians, etc. The age before had focused mostly on structure, clean lines, and the emphasis on reason. This new age ushered in an opposite mindset of a new appreciation for natural beauty, an obligation to break the rules that were previously so tediously followed, and an extreme focus on the emotions of the individual. These three things would guide a generation of artists to push past boundaries in a way that had never been done before, challenging them to think in ways that broke barriers for creative expression and tested the limits of the human mind.

Awe of Nature
The "sublime" became a focus of many Romantic pieces, artists really delving into its pure power and majesty. They wanted to get back to purity of God's creation through connecting with the natural world

Break from Tradition
Classical examples so stressed the influence of man over the elements, abiding by countless sets of rules in everything they did. Romantics broke these rules by breaking from old form, allowing their art to be driven by their rebellious spirit.

Exploring Strong Emotion
The Augustan Era before the Romantic period focused on reason and rigid structure. This new era ushered in a whole new mindset where emotions were allowed to run free without the reins of reason to pull them back in. Artists (and authors alike) created pieces like never before, diving head first into fantastical ideas that, for once, had no limitations.
